ANUSARA Yoga

Somatic Yoga Flow

"Somatic", from the Greek word sōma, means "body." In yoga and movement practices, somatic refers to focusing on how movement feels rather than how it looks.

Somatic Yoga Flow is soft and slow, inviting you to listen to your body through fluid movement. Explore how your body feels with intuitive movement and non-linear yoga.

Developing sensitivity to sensation cultivates interoception—your capacity to sense yourself from within. By consciously tuning into physical sensations, the insula—a part of the brain—processes this input, integrating it with emotions and thoughts. This deepens self-awareness, enhances emotional regulation, and increases body awareness.

In this style of practice, you follow what feels nourishing and needed as your body unwinds and you listen. You will leave feeling softer, stronger, and more connected to your body’s innate wisdom.

This class incorporates therapeutic alignment, strength, and restorative elements. It focuses on the structure of the body and optimizing postural habits for a more pain-free existence in a body that feels stable, open, and energized. Following a brief warm-up, we will integrate therapeutic alignment into specific exercises and asanas, incorporate simple strength drills, and conclude with restful, restorative poses.

Alignment principles based on biomechanics will guide our practice. Biomechanics, the science of the living, moving body, encompasses how muscles, bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments collaboratively function. The intention is to create optimal conditions for health and well-being.

Each class rotation will emphasize a specific region of the body: feet and knees, hips and legs, lower back and core, head, neck, and upper back/shoulders.

To align our minds and hearts, this class begins with an opportunity for attitudinal alignment through a Heart Theme—a short talk offering simple and practical philosophical concepts intended to inspire and guide you in aligning with life. The physical practice is grounded in the biomechanical alignment principles of Anusara Yoga, a therapeutic approach to Hatha Yoga.

The focus is on optimizing alignment, intelligently working with your individual anatomy to enhance strength, expansion, and freedom—not on perfecting poses or adhering to rigid ideas about “correctness”. This class is designed to support you in aligning your body, mind, and heart toward your highest intentions for health and happiness.

“Anusara Yoga was new to me. I came to enjoy the flavour of this alignment focused yoga at the ThaiVedic training. Barbra taught us Structural Yoga Therapy. She gives clear instructions with specific wording to create sequences that encourage me to heal and find a better way of life physically and mentally. Barbra understands students’ delicate mind and body. I greatly appreciate her ability to modify the practice to suit the needs of the individual.”
